Triathlons & Mental Toughness

In a study published in the Journal of Multidisciplinary Research, Tony Marshall and his fellow colleagues explored the world of Triathlon and its effects on mental toughness. This grueling long-distance sport requires more than just a physically fit individual, it requires a certain level of psychological fitness. Mental toughness is described in the research as the “quality that determines how people deal with challenge, stressors, and pressure, irrespective of prevailing circumstances.” (Clough and Strycharczyk 2011) The study conducted revealed that mental toughness improved during the 6-month training program and up to 1 month after the race. The individual participants self-reported higher levels of confidence, commitment and control only one short month after training began!
